[FA-project idea] objective style warfare

as a fan of Dotswarlocks books and both campaigns, im curious to know what it would take to make a mod/map that feels more like some of those fights. a more objective based game where the victory conditions aren't to kill the enemy commander but to name a few ideas:
-protect civilians/node until they can be evacuated by Q-gate (cybran most likely)
-defend a fortified colony (protect civilians till they and/or you die or you kill all attackers)
those are the only 2 i have for now but im thinking the attackers would gate like normal, where the defenders would have some fortifications and weapons in place, however not much in the way of factories or economy.
probably over-ambitious for a first mod and someone with no real map making experience, but what the hell, i need a summer project.
P.S. please dont say "play the campaign again"|||This would be interesting because it's basically the campaign missions, except that you'd be fighting someone.
I'd start by looking through the vanilla and FA maps, working out which ones are balanced for ACU's jumping in unsupported and getting that working.|||you have no idea how much i would LOVE to be able to make a scenario map based off a portion of dot's stories|||SCU vs. SCU combat!!!|||BulletMagnet|||-The-Baron-
